So after discussing various sections of this four and a half hour exam That was developed in 1953 by a comman banch of 9 Business schools with the goal of finding a standardised base to provide B.schools with quality applicants, which is now taken more than 250 thousand times annually and that sucks the hell out of your brain and practically leaving not a single second of relaxation - coz more harder answer you gave, harder the question become that gona be shooted at you (though the credit that question carry increases with the hardness). This happens due to the fact that GMAT follows computer adaptive testing (CAT).
I would like to remind you that you can Score MAXIMUM - 800 MARKS ( which depands on the actual score computation).
But the actual score you get is categorised in the following format:
-overall score : ranging 200 - 800
-math score : ranging 0 - 60
-verbal score: ranging 0 - 60
-Analytical Writing Assessment(AWA)score: ranging 0 - 6

THE THREE MOST COMMANLY ASKED QUESTION ABOUT GMAT SCORE THAT I FACED IN LAST 2-3 YEARS IS:
1)when the score for gmat is valid for 5 years in a row, why business schools preffer sometimes lower score to higher one?
-so the answer is as simple as a cup of tea.
Percentile is the thing that counts- a particular year's question bank could be harder in comparison to another. so percentile is the thing that provides B.schools clearest picture.

2)HOW TO REGISTER FOR THE GMAT TEST?
-This can be done online by going to the official site of Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). The seat availability can change quickly. If you are sure about the date and if it's available, you should register immediately. You would need to pay the required fee of US$250 by credit card.
If you are an international applicant and do not wish to pay by credit card, you can register at the Regional Registration Centers (RRC) of GMAC in your area for gmat.

3)WHAT'S THE MINIMUM ACCEPTED SCORE?
-This is the question that i feel toughest to answer. The reason is possiblity to overcome a low test score with impressive real world accomplishments, good undergraduate performance, etc.

Moreover most B.schools do not publish a minimum acceptable GMAT score or detailed statistics about the scores achieved by applicants. However, schools do generally publish the average and median score of their latest intake, which can be used as a guide. At nearly all of the top business schools that are commonly listed in popular magazines and ranking services, the GMAT scores will average in the upper 600s or low 700s.

-The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania : commonly regarded as one of the top business schools in the US, reports an average GMAT score of 713
-Harvard Business School: another top U.S. business school, reports a 2006 average of 707.
-Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management: an average GMAT of 700, with approximately 75 percent of enrolled students scoring between 650 and 740.

So we decided to make a post containing all the info, to facilitate readers by providing all info at one place.

SO HERE WE START:-

GMAT is a test of general skills and knowledge on the basis of verbal, mathematical and writting skills but is more focused to test your ability and adaptability under max pressure. But getting in to detail -

-WHAT GMAT STANDS FOR?
GRADUATE MANAGEMENT ADMISSION TEST is what GMAT stands for.

-WHAT'S THE FORMATTING AND TIMING?
GMAT format can be divided in to three main sections-
1) Analytical Writting Assessment
2) Quantitative Section
3) Verbal Section

AND AS FAR AS TIMING IS CONCERNED, HAVE A LOOK AT THIS TABLE:

Now the question arises what are these 3 catergories all about?

1) Analytical Writting Assessment(AWA):- AWA of the GMAT is designed as a direct measure of your ability to think critically and to communicate your ideas properly. The AWA consists of two writing tasks—Analysis of an Issue and Analysis of an Argument, based on general interest related on various subjects.

-Analysis of an Issue
For the Analysis of an Issue section, you will need to analyze the issue presented and explain your point of view on the subject. There is no correct answer. Instead, you should consider various perspectives. Use relevant reasons or examples drawn from your experience, observations, or reading to develop your own position on the issue.
The Analysis of an Issue is focused to test your ability to explore the complexities of an issue or opinion and, if appropriate, to take a position that is informed by your understanding.

-Analysis of an Argument
For the Analysis of an Argument section, you will need to analyze the reasoning behind a given argument and write a critique of that argument. You are not being asked to present your own views on the subject.
So you shall always consider the following when developing your essay:
-What questionable assumptions underlie the thinking behind the argument?
-What alternative explanations or counter-examples might weaken the conclusion?
-What sort of evidence could help strengthen or refute the argument?(whatever is your supporting point)
The Analysis of an Argument targets to test your ability to formulate an appropriate and constructive critique of a specific conclusion based on a specific line of thinking.

2) Quantitative Section:- This section of the GMAT measures the ability of quantitative reasoning, solving quantitative problems, and interpreting graphic/tabular/diagramatic data. Two types of multiple-choice questions usually asked under this section are -
Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency.

Problem-Solving and Data-Sufficiency questions are intermingled throughout the section. Both types of questions require knowledge of:
-advanced arithmetic,
-elementary algebra
-commonly known concepts of geometry.

though Problem-Solving Questions are particularly designed to test:
-basic mathematical skills,understanding of elementary mathematical concepts, and the ability to reason quantitatively and solve quantitative problems.

ON THE OTHER HAND, Data-Sufficiency Questions are focused to measure your ability to:
-analyze a quantitative problem,
-recognize which information is relevant,
-determine at what point there is sufficient information to solve a problem.
Data-Sufficiency questions are accompanied by some initial information and two statements, labeled (1) and (2). You must decide whether the statements given offer enough data to enable you to answer the question. You must choose one of the following answers:
(a)Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) is not sufficient.
(b)Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) is not sufficient.
(c)BOTH TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER suffcient ALONE.
(d)EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
(e)Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

3) Verbal Section:-The Verbal section of the GMAT measures your ability to read and comprehend written material, reason and evaluate arguments, and correct written material to conform to standard written English.

Three types of multiple-choice questions are used in the Verbal section of the GMAT exam -Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, and Sentence Correction.

-Reading Comprehension Questions are up to 350 words long on topics,generally, from the social sciences, physical or biological sciences, and business-related areas like: marketing, economics, human resource management.
And because this section of the GMAT exam includes passages from several different content areas,you may have no specific knowledge of the material.
Reading Comprehension passages are accompanied by interpretive, applied, and inferential questions.All questions are to be answered on the basis of what is stated or implied in the reading passage. Which are asked to measure your
-ability to understand, analyze, and apply information
-Understanding words and statements in reading passages(ability to comprehend terms used in the passage and your understanding of the English language).

-Critical Reasoning Questions are designed to test the reasoning skills involved in making arguments, evaluating arguments, and formulating or evaluating a plan of action. Questions are based on materials from a variety of sources. No familiarity with the specific subject matter is needed.
This section measures your ability to reason effectively in three areas:
-Argument construction: Questions of this type may ask you to recognize the basic structure of an argument, properly drawn conclusions, underlying assumptions, well-supported explanatory hypotheses, or parallels between structurally similar arguments.
-Argument evaluation: Questions of this type may ask you to analyze a given argument, recognize factors that would strengthen or weaken an argument, reasoning errors committed in making an argument, or aspects of the methods by which an argument proceeds.
-Formulating and evaluating a plan of action: Questions of this type may ask you to recognize the relative appropriateness, effectiveness, or efficiency of different plans of action; factors that would strengthen or weaken a proposed plan of action; or assumptions underlying a proposed plan of action.

-Sentence Correction Questions ask you which of the five choices best expresses an idea or relationship. The questions will require you to be familiar with the stylistic conventions and grammatical rules of standard written English. You must also demonstrate your ability to improve incorrect or ineffective expressions.

This section tests two broad aspects of language proficiency:
-Correct expression: A correct sentence is grammatically and structurally sound and conforms to all the rules of standard written English. A correct sentence will not have dangling, misplaced, or improperly formed modifiers, unidiomatic or inconsistent expressions, or faults in parallel construction.
-Effective expression: An effective sentence expresses an idea or relationship clearly and concisely, as well as grammatically. This does not mean that the choice with the fewest and simplest words is necessarily the best answer but only means that there are no superfluous words or needlessly complicated expressions in the best choice. In evaluating the diction of a sentence, you must be able to recognize whether the words are well chosen, accurate, and suitable for the context.

YOU MAY HAVE SEEN MANY COMMENTS IN COMMENTS SECTION OR IN SHOUTBOX ABOUT HOW TO START TRACKING THE MOUNTAIN CALLED GMAT.
Many of us know a lot and some of us know nothing and most of us were in most dangerous condition of knowing something that may or may not be correct.
We, gmatcracked team, keep on keeping the questions about how to start with gmat thing and what we, gaurav and kunal, used to answer them is not to think much and limit themselves to the knowledge that gmat is nothing morethan a test which you are required to qualify to get your ass into a good mba college and to get there you should start working on the one point program which says
- give a practice test to have an idea where you actually stand
- than read general material available on net and also here (like acro gmat, gmat 2003 to 2008 series etc.)
-than try your luck again with a full length test and try to figure out specific areas where you are trailing. ex: quant or verbal or reading comprehension etc.
-than give yourself opportunity to workout on that particular area with books like ( ds-1000, ps-1000, sc-1000 etc.)
-than you can get littile more expertice and exposure with high end material like (og-10, og-11, kaplan, manhattan books etc.)

But i used to wonder all the time is how to provide you proper info about gmat and i started searching in regard (ITS NOT LIKE I DIDNT FIND ANYTHING BUT WHAT I USED TO GET AS MY SEARCH RESULTS IS THE INFO THAT IS USEFUL BUT MISLEADING IN SOME OR THE OTHER SORT.) and the other thing that put kunal and me to have hour discussions is there no file that could actually help our readers (specially new ones) to get a concrete base.
All info in one cake to start with the proper knowledge base, leaving no chance for them to be misguided by anyone.

Finally i can say after long time that very soon our own GMAT FORUMS will be up and working where we all can discuss issues related with GMAT and share all the files and other Gmat utilities.

Most of the material is still available for download in the archives but soem of the GMAT material this blog had been temporarily taken off from downloads as we will be putting all that up on the Forums very soon .

lets see in what all ways the vedic maths or better say fast maths can be used to beat your own mental skills and in some cases, even calculator ;)

Example 1 : Finding Square of a number ending with 5
To find the square of 75

Do the following

Multiply 5 by 5 and put (5X5)=25 as your right part of answer.
=> xxxxxxx25
now,Multiply 7 with the next higher digit
=> 7 X (7+1)=7X8
gives 56 as the left part of the answer
so, Answer is 5625

Example 2 : Calculate 43 X 47 (The above 'rule' works when you multiply 2 numbers with units digits add upto 10 and tenth place same)
3X7=21
xxxxxxx21
4X(4+1)=20

The answer is 2021 Same theory worked here too.

same as above; Find 52 X 58 ? Answer = 3016 How long this take ?

Example 3: Multiply 52 X 11
answer is 572
Write down the number being multiplied
5xxxxxxxxx2
and put the total of the digits between two digits
52 X 11 is [ 5 and 5+2=7 and 2 ] ,
answer is 572
note: in case you want to multiply 52 with 111
just write 7 twice => 5772
in case of 1111
57772

sum,here 5+2 = 7 is written one time lesser than the 1's in the digit.

PROOF: B can assume any value between 3 and 9

If B = 3, then CD = 111-13 = 98 and C = 9

If B = 9, then CD = 111-19 = 92 and C = 9

So for all B between 3 & 9, C = 9

Therefore the correct answer is D (C = 9)

[Length of perpendicular from origin to line ax +by + c = 0 ismod (c / sqrt (a^2 + b^2))]
The radius is 1 unit.

So the shortest distance is 2.4 - 1 unit = 1.4 units

The basis of Vedic mathematics, are the 16 sutras, which attribute a set of qualities to a

(Phrases) and 120 words laid down simple steps for solving all mathematical problems in
easy to follow 2 or 3 steps.

First term a=2,
common difference d=2
since even numbertherefore sum to first n numbers of Arithmetic progression would be
x/2(2a+(x-1)d)
=> x/2(2*2+(x-1)*2)=x(x+1)
and this is equal to 79*80
therefore x=79 which is odd...
so number of even terms between 1 and n are 79.
means n= (1+2*79) =159

320 + 5x = 580 - .41x; x = # of days after price is same;
solving for x; x is approximately 48,
thus the required price is 320 + 5 * 48 = 560
cents = $5.6

Soln:
Prob. of a randomly selected person to have NOT been born in a leap yr = 3/4Take 2 people,
probability that none of them was born in a leap = 3/4*3/4 = 9/16.
The probability at least one born in leap = 1- 9/16 = 7/16 < year =" 3/4*3/4*3/4" born =" 1" 64 =" 37/64"> 0.5
Thus min 3 people are needed.

4. In a basketball contest, players must make 10 free throws. Assuming a player has 90% chance of making each of his shots, how likely is it that he will make all of his first 10 shots?

Ans:
The probability of making all of his first 10 shots is given by(9/10)* (9/10)* (9/10)* (9/10)* (9/10)* (9/10)* (9/10)* (9/10)* (9/10)* (9/10) = (9/10)^10 = 0.348
=> 35%

5. A and B ran a race of 480 m. In the first heat, A gives B a head start of 48 m and beats him by 1/10th of a minute. In the second heat, A gives B a head start of 144 m and is beaten by 1/30th of a minute. What is B’s speed in m/s?(A) 12(B) 14(C) 16(D) 18(E) 20

Ans:
race 1 :- ta = tb-6 ( because A beats B by 6 sec)
race 2 :- Ta = tb+2 ( because A looses to B by 2 sec)
By the formula D= S * T
we get two equations
480/Sa = 432/Sb -6 ------------1)
480/Sa = 336/Sb +2------------2)
Equating these two equations we get
Sb = 12ta,
Sa stand for time taken by A and speed of A resp.

Sentence correction

A tightly worded sentence is generally considered more effective, so, all things being equal, choose the shortest answer. In every case , you should base your answer on the conventions of standard written English. Do not fall into the error of using informal, conversational English as the criterion for answering sentence correction questions. In particular, sentence correction questions measure your knowledge of the following points of grammar:

1) agreement of the subject and verb.
2) parallel construction
3) agreement of pronoun and antecedent
4) correct use of adjectives and adverbs.
5) correct placement of modifiers.
6) coordination and subordination of sentence elements.
7) tense sequences.

Reading comprehension

There are a number of different categories of GMAT reading comprehension questions; however, certain general solution procedures can be applied successfully to most or all of them. THE BETTER NAME FOR THESE SO CALLED PROCEEDURES IS THUMB RULE.

Here is one such procedure that many test takers find helpful.

Step 1: Skim over the questions quickly

Skim over the questions at the moderately fast rate. This quick inspection should help you determine which of the questions ask you about information directly stated in the passage, which ones call for the use of inference , which ones ask you to make evaluations, and so forth.
or you can simply say - try to use your brain only in those things which were asked for marks and leave everything else.
Once you have skimmed the questions, you should have some idea of what to look for as you read the passage. Make sure you skim the questions quickly! This is a preliminary step, so you should't spend too much time on it. You will be rereading the questions more carefully in a later step.

Step 2: Read the passage at your fastest rate.

Read the passage at your fastest rate-without skimming. You shouldn't worry about full comprehension of the passage at this point. The purpose of this step is to give you an idea of the structure of the passage and to familiarize you with the locations of keys words, facts, and ideas. As you read, try to keep in mind the questions you just skimmed. If you come across material that seems related to a question, remember the line number , then check that question's wording. Don't worry if at this point you can't recall all of the questions or if you can't find materials relating to all of the questions in the passage. You will see the questions and the passage again during the course of later steps.

Step 3: Reread the questions at your best rate for comprehension, and check the materials you found during your first reading of the passage in Step 2.

The purpose of this step is to enable you to answer the more accessible questions quickly so that you may concentrate on the more taxing questions during the next two steps.

Reread the questions one at a time. This time, as you read, do so at your best rate of reading for comprehension. After you have read a question, think back to the reading of the passage that you did in Step 2. If during that reading you noted materials that were relevant to the given question, find those materials again and reread them to see if they provide the answer. If they do indeed do so, mark the answer in the appropriate place.

If you come to a question for which you did not find any relevant materials when you read the passage, go on to the next question! Don't read the passage again to find answer material unless you are fairly sure that you know where that material is. If you have no idea where the answer material is located, reading the passage again to find it can cost you valuable time.

Step 4: Reread the passage at your best, most comfortable rate for comprehension.

Your purpose during this reading will be different from that of your first reading in Step 2. This time you will already be aware of the overall structure of the passage, so you can concentrate instead on finding subtler meanings. Also, by this time you should have fewer questions to think about since you have probably already answered several of them during Step 3.

This step will be your final complete reading of the passage. This time read the passage at your most comfortable rate for comprehension, but don't stop and backtrack at any point. As you read, keep in mind the questions that remain unanswered. Then follow the same process as in Step 2: if you come across material that seems related to a question, remember the line number , then check that question's wording. Resist the temptation to break off your reading and backtrack. Keep on reading!

Step 5: Reread the questions that are still unanswered and check the materials that you found when you reread the passage in Step 4.

This step calls for a third reading of the questions that you have not answered yet. Follow the same process as in Step 3. After you have read a question, think back to your rereading of the passage in Step 4. ok guys. finally i am free and got all the data that i almost lost in my crashed harddisk.
any ways....
as clear by the subject of this particular post - to clear the test named gmat or cat or such others the main thing is to work smartly and mind shouldnt be closed from any field.

like i give you one example:-
a few tests back there was a question, particularly in quant section, looking very much as an equation but was rather a very simple mind-bender

question said- if two is 20-23-15 and seven is 19-5-22-5-14 then how will if write twenty seven and there were many options available.

i am quoting this particular question only because this question got maximum wrong attempts. and to be very frank and to the best of my knowledge, was a bit confusing as well.

confusing????? yes it was cause of one thing

the way mind work.... hard harder and ...............

some friends converted the alphabets t-20 means a-1, b-1, c-3 and so on to z-26 and did than tried to find out the similar options

but to the surprice there were 3 options very very similar to that and at the end all 3 were wrong

and the correct option was 20-23-25-19-5-22-5-14

simply 2 7 = 27

the moral is simple that while going through question dont start think hard from the very first second. give it a read and then try to hit the bull.

anyways we will keep posting these tricky things now onwards. you just keep preparing for the test coz its not too far now ;)

Hello friends.How the preparation is is going. I am back with vedic maths lesson 2 as I promised in earlier post and I can say your wait for this post hasn’t got waste as this post will give a direct hint to what amazing power vedic maths has and why u need to master it.

I said in my first post that vedic maths is contained in 16 sutras and 16 sub sutras. Today in this post I shall start with the sutras.

I’m starting with the 2^nd sutra of Vedic maths. The 1^st will come a little later on.

SUTRA 2 – NIKHILAM NAVATAS’CARMAM DASATAH

(Simply meaning “all from 9 and the last from 10 “ )

This formula can be very very effectively applied to multiplication of numbers which are near to the bases like 10,100,100 ie to the power of 10’s.This formula is very simple and will make multiplication steps reduced to minimum and leave it all on very simple mental calculation. I bet after reading this post you will be able to do calculations like 997 x 990 in a matter of seconds maybe a minute at max and all yourself. So lets start.

The difference between number and base is called deviation. the deviation can be positive or negative. Negative deviation can also be written as bar n top of number but it’s not necessary.

Ex Number are 14. The deviation will be (14-10) = 4. We took base 10 here .Another example 96. The deviation here will be 3 (103-100). We took base 100 here.

Now lest start the multiplication . lets start with easy numbers like..

7 X 8

we will apply the nikhilam ( sutra 2) to do this now.

In this case the base is 10 for both the numbers.

Step 1-

Write both numbers to be multiplied one below the other like

Step 2 – take deviation from both numbers and write them in from of them like..

7 -3

8 -2

Step-3 answer

Now the answer will have the 2 parts . The right hand side and the left hand side. Don’t get confused here its all very simple in practical sense.

7 -3

8 -2

7-2/ (3X2) = 5/6=56

as you can see what I did was in the RHS of the answer we just multiply the deviations that is 2X3 in LHS(left hand side) of answer we can do 4 methods but the method I chose here was I subtracted the 2 from 7 ie I subtracted 2^nd deviation(2) from 1^st number (7) and we got 5 as RHS ( right-hand side) of answer, then we just combined the RHS and LHS of answer and we get 5 / 6 = 56

Lets do this for :-

98 X 97

98 - 02

97 – 03

98-3 / 3x2= 95/06 = 9506

Example –

994 X 988

994 - 006

988 -012

-------------------

994-12/ 6X12= 982/072 = 982072

1275 X 1004

1275 -275

1004 - 004

1279/275X4 = 1279/ 1_100 = 1280100 ( 1 got carries to RHS )

CASE - where one number is more and other is less than the base.

Example

13 x 7

13 - 3

7 - (-3)

13-03 / 3x3 = 10/-9 = 100-9 = 91

So that was the Sutra -2 . I know many of you may have doubts and question about this as it cannot be that simple. You can just leave a comment in the comments below with your questions and I will explain with example solutions.

Vedic (vadic) maths – lesson 1

Vedic math or the ‘fast math’ is a system of reasoning and mathematical working based on ancient India teachings called Veda. It is fast efficient easy to learn and use.

It is being taught in some of the most prestigious institutions in the England and Europe. NASA applied its principals in the filed of artificial intelligence.

What is vadic maths?

It is an ancient technique which simplifies, multiplication, divisibility, complex numbers, squaring, cubing, and square and cube roots. Even recurring decimals and auxiliary fractions can be handled by vadic maths. Vedic math’s forms a part of the jyotish shastra which is one of the six parts of vedangas. The jyotish shastra or astronomy is made up of 3 parts called skandas, it mean big branch of tree shooting outwards.
Vedic maths was made famous by a swami called bharathikrishna (1184-1960)

Basis of vadic maths

The basis of vadic maths is 16 sutras, which attribute a set of qualities to a number or a group of numbers. The ancient Hindu scientist (rishis) of bharat (India) in 16 sutras (phrase) and 120 words laid down simple steps for solving all mathematical problems in easy to follow 2 or 3 steps.

Mental or 1 or 2 line Vedic methods can be used effectively for solving division, reciprocal, factorization , HCF , squared and square roots, cubes and cube roots, algebraic equations, multiple simultaneous equations, higher degree equations, differential calculus, partial fractions, integration, Pythagoras theorem , Apollonius theorem, analytical conics and so on.

Is it useful in today’s world?

Given the initial training of modern math to students in today’s school, students will be able to comprehend the logic and achieve unimaginable help in their working in the world afterwards. It is amazing how with the help of 16 sutras and 16 sub-sutras the vedic seers were able to mentally calculate complex mathematical problems.

Vedic maths is utmost important for every GMAT and CAT aspirant. It will give u a huge boost in your quant section as you will be able to do all the calculation mentally and with amazing fast speed. This saves time in your examination and increases your moral.

Now we all know what is vadic maths and it importance. In the next lesson we will start with the 16 sutras and how to apply the vadic math logic to mathematical problem.

hope your preprations are going well.

some of our readers are a bit confused about how much time is sufficient to prepare for the test and being and online gmat prepration blog we are supposed to know the answer but to be very frank and honest - there is no time line that can be drawn as a endline for the prepration.
and keep in mind that there is no starting line as well.

i can place a number of example where people cracked the gmat easily just with a study of 10-15 weeks and opposite to the list of these examples their is a list of those who prepared for long 2-3 years to get the desired results.

so we can not suggest any fixed time though we can tell you the average.

as per a survey conducted in USA, the average study of 20-26 months was sufficient for average people. [average people is used for the people who are scoring average grades in their past educational background]

SO I THINK YOU CAN NOW ESTIMATE TIME YOU WILL REQUIRE TO GET THE THINGS GOING IN DESIRED DIRECTION.

vedic maths is good to learn and is really very useful in exams and we have to keep one thing is that after some practice we can solve almost all quesions regarding maths but what about vocab???

in this case, there are only two posibilities....
-either you know the answer
-or you dont...

and in reading comprehensions, the whole para could be clear in one reading or could demand many readings just if we dont have a good vocab.

so now we will work give a littile try to our vocab as well.

and unlike vedic maths it cant be tought coz there is no formula but yes we can give you a good base to start with.

one of our regular readers asked us a question about some trick which can help in subtracting a number from the base number.
we are sorry for the delay in solving that query but that happened coz i was busy in my exams.

here is a trick which i think could be helpful...

step 1:- take the number you need to subtract from base number

(it will surely be near that number. i mean if you have 22 your base will be 100 or if its 760 then it might be 1000)

step 2:- subtract the units digit from 10, and remaining digits from 9 of the number you need to subtract from the base.

and thats it... :)

isnt it really simple

lets see it with an example

you want to subtract 638 from 1000 so what will you do....

6---3---8 (subtract from)

!----!----!

9---9---10

------------

3---6---2 is the answer

------------

you can subtract any number from base number with this trick

Some neat vedic math tricks

SQUARING OF NUMBERS NEAR THE BASE.

Observe simple examples:

97 Squared = 97 - 3 / 3x3 = 94 / 09
96 Squared = 96 - 4 / 4x4 = 92 / 16.

When the number being squared is above the base, of 100 here, we add the Excess and Square the Excess:
104 Squared = 104 + 4 / 4x4 = 108 / 16 = 10, 816
104 x 105 = 104 + 5 / 4x5 = 109 / 20 = 10, 920

What if we enlarged our numbers to 998 Squared?

It is close to 1,000 so we say Base 1,000 and know to have 3 zero's on the right hand side of the ( / ).
998 Squared = 998 - 2 / 2x2 = 996 / _ _ 4 = 996 / 004. = 996,004

Understanding this, you can be calculating digits in the millions: 9998 Squared = 9998 - 2 / 2x2 = 9996 / _ _ _ 4
(Since we are in Base 10,000 the 4 zeros determine the need for 4 digits after the ( / ). = 9996 / 0004 = 99,960,004.

THE SQUARING OF NUMBERS ENDING IN 5

If we wanted to square the number 25, ie 25 x 25, we would conventionally take 3 lines of working out. Vedic Mathematics merely looks at the Question, applys one of the 16 Sutras, and solves it Mentally in One-Line. In this case, the Sutra at work is "By One More Than The Previous Digit".

Observing that 25 is a 2 digit number, 5 is the last digit, but we are mainly interested in "the Previous Digit" which is 2.
We say, mentally, "What is One more than Two?" It is 3. The word "By" in the Sutra really means "to multiply".
The setting out for the first half of the answer is thus:
25 Squared = 2 "By" 3 / ........ = 2 x 3 / ........ To this we tag on the last digit "5" squared: = 2 x 3 / 5 x 5 = 6 / 25
Thus the answer is 625.

Similarly, all other numbers that end in 5, when squared, can be done instantly:
15 Squared = 1 x 2 / 5 x 5 = 2 / 25 = 225
35 Squared = 3 x 4 / 5 x 5 = 12 / 25 = 1,225
45 Squared = 4 x 5 / 5 x 5 = 20 / 25 = 2,025
95 Squared = 9 x 10 / 5 x 5 = 90 / 25 = 9, 025

after learning how to square a number ending with 5 now we will do something called comman base method.

this method is a technique of multiplying number which comes under same base.
this base could be anything like
-10
-100
-1000 etc.

to multiply two numbers we just need to make them subtracted or added to a comman base.
lets do an example.
MULTIPLY 99 X 92

step 1:-MAKE COMMAN BASE
here the base is 100. (coz while setting the base we should keep in mind that the base should be closest to the numbers to make sure that the minimum calcultaions will be required.

step 2:-SUBTRACT THE NUMBERS FROM THE BASE AND WRITE THEM IN THE ORDER.

100- 99 = 01
100- 92 = 08
(we write the number we get after subtraction in as many digits as many zeros we have in the base, here we have 2 zeros in 100)
AND YOU HAVE TO WRITE THESE IN THE FOLLOWING SEQUENCE

99 01
X !
92 08
----------
91 08 = 9108 is the answer

this 91 we get my subtracting (92-01) or (99-08) cross digits
and 08 we get by multipling the straight line of the digits we get after subtraction from base (01 X 08)
the zero wil remain coz we have two digits in our base.

isnt it simple

now lets try this with two digits which
one is bigger than base another is smaller than base

112 X 92

so step 1:-
112-100 = +12 (no need to add zero coz we have only two zeros in base and we have two digits in 12 as well)
92-100 = -08 (the sign will be on negative coz 92 is lesser than 100)

(in the previous example we ignore negative sign by subtracting both the digits from 100 but in this case its not possible)

so now we have

112 +12
92 -08
-------------
104 -96

now we have to right it like this

- 96
-----------
10304 thats the answer

after getting a good response about vadic maths here is the very first lesson about this.
before starting let me tell you again that its not gona be a cup of tea but yes, we can do this all together.

keeping in mind that "practice makes a man perfect and writting makes a man exact"
we will start our very first lesson.

ok the very first thing we will discuss is squaring a number ending with 5

ok let begin with this (you must be knowing that 5 square is 25 ) ;)

step one: take a number ending with 5.

say, 45.

step two: write the ten's and unit's number 25 without thinking much.

so you have xxxxx25 (doesnt matter how many digits before 25)

step three: take the remaining number before 5 from the original number

in this case its 4

step four: add 1 to this number(step 3) and multiply the number with the number of step three.

means (4+1) X 4 = 20

step 5 : simply put this number(step 4) in front of step 2's 25

means 20 25

and thats your answer 2025

you dont even need a calculator.

now we will try this formula for some more numbers...

lets take 25.....

------ (2+1)X2 = 6
--------- 625

thats the square of 25 :)

lets do this for a bigger number say, 85

------- xxxxx25
------- (8+1)X8 = 72
------- 7225
thats the answer

you can use the same formula for ever number ending with 5.

and now the homework comes......

you should learn the tables.... i know you have done a lot of them in school but its time to revise them

learn from 1X20 to 30X20 or atleast till 20X20

hope your prepration is going well....

we will discuss something about quant now.after a detailed discussions with my professors and other lecturers of quant i got some good knowledge which i would like to share with you.

first of all lets discuss why they actually want us to know quant?
- actually quant is the section which is segmented to test the aplicant's mental abilities to deal with figures.

you would be wondering like me about why they actually give so much importance to verbal calcultations (we have pcs, calculators and hell lot of equipments) but the answer is somewhat justified.

they want us to show how fast we are in playing with figures. the professor i talked about all this told me that you have to have a compatibility with figures because while reading company reports (some times from xx to xxx pages) and full of ratios and data figures, calculators and pcs become obsolete and mental abilities makes all the difference. they told me that the thin line between a good managerial decision and a bad one is actually generated from here only and i agreed him somewhat.

anyways the better reason to work on quant is - it is present in exam and you are not USA's president who can alter the exam style. so better learn it and rule the exam.

the main thing as mentioned above is figures and compatibility with them and to have a good gelling with figures you must be easy with calculations.

we are doing them from very first standard in schools and still have some kind of a fear left with in us about how to go ahead with them. so here is a solution to the problem-

yes this is the sollution for all the problems or atleast most of them. after learning this you will wonder how easy it is to multiply and divide numbers which you wouldnt have even dared to add or subtract.percentages and proportioning will be not a difficult task at all.

I was just surfing the Gmat websites when i found these cool forums of MBA where a lot of MBA aspirants come toghter and discuss amongst themselves various issues , very healthy interaction takes place and it very informative also. Many of these are past Gmat takers and many are ones who will be taking the same in near future. These forums can be a great advantge for any student going for Gmat specially if its your first try at the exam.

Reading Comprehension

today we will continue with our verbal portion practice.
We will practice reading comprehension and look for the best methods to go about solving the reading comprehension , we will also be looking at some of the tips and tricks for solving the reading comprehension.

What is a reading coprehension

GMAT reading comprehension questions are meant to test your understanding of the implications, meanings, and structures presented in the passages. You can expect to see 2 to 4 passages of 200 to 400 words each, in the verbal section of the GMAT exam. Each passage will be followed by 4 questions. Because the GMAT is now a computer-adaptive test, you will only see 1 question at a time. The passage, however, will remain on your computer screen until you have answered all of the questions related to it.

There is a certain patterm that has been seen since the reafing comprehensions started coming in the MAT exams.This pattern shows us that RC's can be classified into 3 broad groups.You will get a passage in the exma from within these 3 groups.

1.Science - If the passage is from science group its most likely to talk about subjects like biology , chemistry , physics . These type of passages are very factual. You should to an initial skimming ( fats reading) of the passage and take note of any factual information given. These types of passages can be boring but they are simple and factual and therefore are relatively easyto do.

2.Social science - Typically, these passages deal with topics such as history, politics, and geography. These are enjoyable to read but the questions they pose can be a little dauting.Read carefully these passages and answer according to questions.You must read these passages slowly in order to answer the many inference questions they are sure to present.

3.Buisness - Business passages involve very difficult structures, and present questions that require you to infer information and even to determine the authors' moods and opinions. They need to be read slowly and carefully.

Tips and tricks

Use your scrap paper - Use your scrap paper to make very brief notes on the main ideas of each paragraph. This will be very useful as in computer based test these days you can do it on screen.
Read the first question before the you read the passage - As the exams these days are on computer you will only see 1 question of the passage , but be sure to read that before starting the passage .
Identify the type of passage you are reading - Identify the passage that has come in the exam and see which of the 3 categories i explained above it falls in , and go about it in that stratergy .
Practice is the key - Nothing can beat the hardcore practice . The best way is to read as much u can before when preparing for the MAT and learn the various reading techniques.

Sentence correction

GMAT sentence correction questions are designed to test the ability to identify the understanding power of not just written English (that is grammatically-correct) but also so the situations that are ambiguous in any sort. Each question has sentences, parts of which have been underlined. You will then be presented with 5 different answer choices presenting alternative ways of stating the underlined portion of the text. One answer choice will repeat the text without any changes (meaning that the sentence is clear in meaning and grammatically correct as written). The other choices will re-write the text, sometimes in subtle ways.

The correct answer will have all of the following 4 characteristics:

No grammatical mistakes
Correct sentence structure
No diction errors
No changes to the sentence's intended meaning

Note: This is not stating that the correct answer is always the most concise one though often this is the case, but does not always hold true. You may find that you need to resist the temptation to always select the shortest answer choice.

GMAT Sentence Correction Tips and Strategies:

Do not waste time on a close reading of answer choice A:

Its a human nature to focus too much on the very first thing and being the first option Choice A is focused the most and generally it (Choice A) repeats the wording of the underscored section. Keep in mind, however, that we are not saying to ignore choice A entirely. It will be correct approximately one fifth of the time. This is just to save time and redundancy as the choice A very rarely is the correct answer but nonetheless it should not be ignored.

so keep in mind while attemping the question to read all the options with equal interest and speed.

Look out for multiple errors. :

A sentence might contain more than one error. A common fallacy that test-takers fall into is to find one error and then quickly choose the answer that corrects that mistake, without considering whether there are other errors in the sentence that an alternative answer choice might also address. The correct answer must correct all of the errors in the underlined text.

Actually this is the same problem as we have discussed for the choice A that we focus too much on what we see first and this leads to avoidance of others.

so keep in mind to have a detailed reading and equal time spreading over each and every option and error.

Employ process of elimination wherever possible:

The easiest way to use process of elimination in sentence correction questions is simply to eliminate any answer choices that are themselves grammatically incorrect. You can also eliminate any choices that alter the intended meaning of the sentence. If you are still unsure about how to answer a question even after narrowing your choices down to two, you will fare better by selecting the more concise of the remaining answer choices – provided that it does not use the passive voice.

this is the place where you can depend on your first thing you focus means if you see any error, you can simply eliminate that particular option and can move on.

Do not worry about spelling or capitalization errors:

The test writers don't get tested for these 2 errors.

When in doubt, look for subtle differences among the different answer choices:

Examining how answer choices differ from one another can also be a good way to determine what errors might be present in the underlined text. This technique can also help you fight the tendency to read so carefully for meaning that you overlook grammatical mistakes.

Read the entire sentence a second time, inserting your selected answer choice:

We have found this to be a very powerful tip for dealing with sentence correction questions. It can keep you from making careless mistakes that would harm your GMAT score.

Trust your ears:

If you get stuck, 'say' the choices in your head and then select the passage that sounds best to your ears. Most test takers, particularly native English speakers, have internalized many more grammar rules than they can explicitly identify.

However, I have have compiled the following "short list" of grammatical rules that the writers particularly like to test. You are strongly encouraged to memorize this list of grammar concepts and rules, and to refresh your knowledge of them, before you sit for the GMAT..

Elliptical verb phrases
Misplaced modifiers
Parallel sentences
Pronoun-subject agreement
Proper use of adverbs (they modify verbs)
Proper use of the semicolon
'Fewer' versus 'less'
Run-on sentences
Sentence fragments

So now that all of you have read the tips on how to approach the reasoning questions let us try and do one simple example.
This example is of medium level and in the final exam the level of questions will be higher so be prepared and do the critical reasoning part practice thouroughly and carefully as this part is the one in which students most often make elementary mistakes due to time constraints and other pressures.

Example question

Some of our federal legislators are opposed to government endowments or other financial support for photography as an art form on the basis that much of modern photography portrays nudity and is thus obscene. These legislators are mistaken, however, since even they would agree that Michelangelo’s works of art, most of which depict nudity, are not obscene.

Which of the following statements, if true, would most seriously weaken the argument above?

The artistic level of the works of the vast majority of modern photographers does not approach that of Michelangelo's works.
Many modern photographic works of art have been displayed in museums alongside Michelangelo's works.
The majority of Michelangelo's work was not funded or otherwise supported by the government.
What these legislators consider to be obscene does not coincide with what the general citizenry views as obscene.
The works of Michelangelo that portray nudity are considered not obscene due to their relatively high artistic value.

The author of the passage attempts to refute the legislators' argument by reasoning essentially as follows:

Premise: Michelangelo's works portray nudity.

Premise: Michelangelo's works are not considered obscene.

Intermediate Conclusion: A work of art that portrays nudity is not necessarily obscene.

Final Conclusion: The legislators are mistaken about why they should not provide funding for photographic art that portrays nudity.

The first answer choice (we'll call it "A") is the second-best answer among the five choices. (A) Suggests a possible explanation why modern photographers' works portraying nudity might be considered obscene while Michelangelo's works portraying nudity would not. But a better response would go further—to explain how artistic value affects whether an artwork is considered obscene. Thus, while (A) tends to weaken the argument, you should look for another answer choice that refutes the argument's unstated assumption more directly.

The second answer choice (we'll call it "B") actually strengthens (supports) the argument, rather than weakening it. (B) Provides some evidence, albeit weak, that Michelangelo's works are relevantly similar to those of modern photographers.

The third answer choice (we'll call it "C") is irrelevant to the argument, which relies on a logical connection between nudity and obscenity, not on any logical connection between federal funding and obscenity

The fourth answer choice (we'll call it "D")fails to provide enough information to either weaken or support the argument. More specifically, (D) does not indicate how the general citizenry's view as to what is obscene compares with that of the legislators. Without this information, (D) accomplishes nothing toward either weakening or supporting the argument.

The fifth answer choice (we'll call it "E")is the best one. (E) directly refutes the unstated assumption that Michelangelo's works and those of modern photographers are similar in all respects relevant to the argument—by stating explicitly that Michelangelo's works are considered not obscene because of their relatively high artistic value.

FORMAT: Multiple-choice (you select one of 5 choices by clicking on an oval)

SKILLS TESTED: Your ability to understand, criticize, and draw reasonable conclusions from arguments.

Before trying out some example questions and how to solve them read the tips on how to go about solving the critical reasoning part.

Important tips on critical reasoning questions

always read the question stem first (before reading the passage). It will contain useful clues about what to look for and think about as you read the passage.

that ask you to identify an assumption and those that ask you to find the choice that most weakens the argument, your task is to determine what must be assumed in order for the argument's conclusion to be reasonably inferable. In the latter type of question, your second task is to find the statement among the answer choices that refutes that assumption.

if the passage confuses you, try identifying the argument's conclusion (often signaled by terms such as "as a result," "consequently," and "therefore") and its premises—evidence that is given as factual (often signaled by terms such as "because," "since," and "given that.") The passages do not always present the components of an argument in the most coherent sequence. Reasoning linearly from premises to conclusion can help you make sense of it all.

In any question that asks which answer choice most effectively either weakens or strengthens the argument, you can be certain that one or two of the answer choices will go the wrong way—by accomplishing just the opposite of what the question asks for. Be on the lookout for them; it's remarkably easy to become confused and go for this type of answer choice under time pressure and during a momentary lapse of concentration.

many passages contain superfluous statements, which are irrelevant to the argument and shouldn't come into play at all in responding to the question at hand. Don't be thrown by these red herrings; separate them out from the important logical features of the argument.

Tackling the verbal portion

The verbal portion of the GMAT consists of three types of questions: Reading Comprehension, Arguments, and Sentence Correction. They are designed to test your ability to reason using the written word. There is roughly the same number of each type of question, for a total of 41 questions.

1. GMAT READING COMPREHENSION

FORMAT:

The GMAT reading comprehension section passages are about 200 to 400 words long. The subject matter of a passage can be almost anything, but the most common themes are politics, history, culture, science, and business.

READING METHODS

There are many methods explained in Gmat books to go about the reading of the comprehension passages. The most common ones are skimming or speed reading of the passage.
According to me this is not a very good idea, the reason being in speed reading the reader is just skimming through the passage and collecting only the most important information from that passage and leaves the other information as it is without recollecting then in their minds.
In reality the speed reading technique of passages is based for those written materials that are non technical in nature which is not the case in Gmat exam reading comprehension passages. The passages you get in reading comprehension are very detailed and demands close scrutiny from the reader. Therefore the technique of speed working may not work in the Gmat reading comprehension.
Another technique that is prevalent for tackling these passages is reading the questions first. This technique can backfire also as questions are themselves sometimes are a paragraph long and reading the question twice or maybe thrice will take away your precious time.
Even after you read the question 2-3 times you maybe clueless as to what its exact reference is to the main passage , this technique is a form of gamble and taking such a big risks in your exam is not a wise idea .
The technique that can be used for tackling the reading comprehension is reading the first two sentences of each paragraph. The topic of the paragraph is explained in the first few sentences. Reading the first sentence of each paragraph will give an overview of the passage. The topic sentences act in essence as a summary of the passage. Furthermore, since each passage is only three or four paragraphs long, previewing the topic sentences will not use up an inordinate amount of time.
I will be giving more detailed information on how to tackle the reading comprehension in later posts as this is an important part of the exam. Illustrations will also be provided for interactive and easy understanding.

Like most students, I was intimidated by the test, so I sought to educate myself on the best course when preparing for the GMAT. I have created this blog to help other students as they begin this new career journey

Lets start with our preperation with the basic contents of the Gmat exam :

Analytical Writing section - designed to test your ability to discern data and information in the technical context of modern business

Quantitative section - designed to tests your ability to handle complex mathematical and analytical operations key to today’s fast-paced business environment.

Verbal Section - that tests your general ability to process written information.

1.Analytical writing section -

In this section, you will be assigned two topics, the Analysis of Issue and the Analysis of Argument. You will have 30 minutes for each of them. There is no break between them. Writing the two essays in a short span of 30 minutes each can be a daunting exercise. In my blog in further posts i will tell clealry the metods to do this section and the procedure of how to go about doing this section of the exam.

2. Quantitative section -

This section includes complicated mathamatical problems. The main heads in this topic are - Arithmetic , Algebra,Word problem,Data Sufficiency. The subheads and how to cover them i will discuss in later posts.

3. Verbal section -

This section of the Gmat exam contains Reading Comprehension, Critical reasoning andSentence correction

I have given the basic heads that are covered in the Gmat . In further posts i will be telling and explaining my readers with the help of many simple tests and resuorces that i will be providing how to go about and sucessfully doing your Gmat exam.
